5 Ways to Throw the Best Oscars Party

Hollywood’s most dignified night is Sunday February 22nd: the 87th Academy Awards. We couldn’t be any more excited to see who wears what and who WINS what… but until then, we need to get prepared. Once again, our invitations to the big show must have gotten lost in the mail, especially with all this snow, so it’s another year as a couch critic. But we’re not complaining. Here’s 5 ways to host the best Oscars Viewing Party.

1. Establish a dress code and color scheme.

To have the ultimate Oscars viewing party — you need to set some rules. First, pick a color scheme for your decorations (because there WILL be decorations). Since the Oscar trophy is gold, I like to go with black, gold and glitter. Once you know the color scheme of your party, you can decide how you want your guests to match it. Ask yourself: do you want to have a PJ party? A black tie affair? A cocktail gathering? I’m doing it big here. I say we go with cocktail party — this means dresses and button ups. Let’s pretend we’re on the Red Carpet. These five dresses from our store would be perfect.

1. Countdown Bandaged Dress | 2. Mixed Sequin Shift Dress | 3. Feelin’ It Strapless Dress | 4. Metallic Sweetheart Strapless Dress | 5. Trophy Metallic Silver Dress

2. Set up a Red Carpet Photo Booth!

It wouldn’t be the ultimate Oscars party without a Red Carpet. All you need is a long roll of red felt or another fabric. Start it from the entrance of your house and set up a backdrop against the wall. The backdrop can be as simple as just hanging some gold and black stars on the wall or as complicated as hanging a white sheet with the Oscars logo running across it with stars. Complete with some props like these ones found on Etsy and you’re done! Use every commercial break as a photo opp!

3. The Essential Popcorn Bar

The Academy Awards celebrate movies, and who doesn’t watch movies without popcorn? Therefore, a popcorn bar is a MAJOR part of any Oscars viewing party. You will need different types of popcorn and a few different add-ins. Try using regular buttered popcorn, cheddar popcorn and kettle corn. For add-ins, use M&Ms, Sno-Caps, Reese’s Pieces, Almonds and any of your other favorite candies! Check your local dollar store to find small baggies or plastic popcorn baskets for guests to fill.

4. Play Oscars Bingo:

While you’re watching the Red Carpet glam, mixing and mingling with your own ~celebrity~ friends, have some fun and play Red Carpet Bingo. Use the printable below or create your own! Give the winner their own Oscar “trophy.” (Bottle of wine, champagne, candy…etc) During the show,if you want to step things up a notch, you can start a show-watching drinking game. IE: every time host Neil Patrick Harris sings, drink. If someone trips, chug. Search Google for more ideas.

Obviously, the drink of the night is Champagne. You must stock up on Prosecco and champagne glasses. You can also find plastic champagne glasses at your local dollar store. But because this is a fancy Oscars viewing cocktail party, you need another option. Martinis.

1 1/3oz Citron Vodka (Try Absolut or Ketel One)

1/2 oz Lime Juic

1/2 oz Triple Sec

1 oz Cranberry Juice

Mix ingredients together and pour straight up into a chilled martini glass.

Classic Dirty Martini:

2 oz Vodka (We suggest Titos or Ketel One)

1 oz+ Olive Juice (Green Pimiento Olives)

Splash Dry Vermouth

Stir together and pour straight up into a chilled martini glass. Garnish with olive.

The Red Carpet coverage begins at 1:30 ET. And the Academy Awards will begin at 7:00 ET.
